Introduction

The course, Facing History and Ourselves, is a course that allows the students to become aware of the issues in today’s world. This course is trying to prepare students for the issues they will face as we enter the world after high school. In this course we examine the choices that we are forced to make today compared to those choices made in the past. We are encouraged to analyze those choices that we do make everyday. Throughout this course, students will become more aware with the diversity that takes place not only in the world but in their own community. Students will also learn about themselves throughout the length of this course. In order to achieve the goals of this class, lessons will be taught through academic research, film, guest speakers, projects, and class discussion.
My name is Megan Sullivan and I am 17 years old and a senior in high school. As I prepare to go off to go to Saint Anselm College next year, I knew that this course would benefit me tremendously. I didn’t know how much this course would mean to me until it was over. During junior year we were preparing to organize our schedule for our senior year. One of the electives that I chose was the course Facing History and Ourselves. I chose this course for several reasons. One of the reasons why I chose this course was because I was eager to know more about the Holocaust. After talking with several students who have taken the course I knew that the Holocaust was a topic that was covered in a lot of depth. I also choose this course because of the experience that the previous students have had. I found out that I would not only learn about the history of the past, but that I would also learn about myself.
